Independent Charity Derbyshire Community Foundation has been asked by the Peoples Health Trust to promote and bring in quality applications for their Active Communities Funding programme across Derbyshire and DerbyCity. They are seeking projects that bring small communities together to share, learn, or play – projects that bring communities closer together and by doing so improve our quality of life and well-being.

If you are a local community group with an annual income of under £350,000 and would like between £5,000 and £50,000 for a two year project (existing or new) then you will be welcome to attend one of our Funding surgeries taking place at the start of July. You will also need to be based in certain eligible wards as the programme is geographically specific.

We will also be providing a unique and useful service of checking through any Derbyshire Active Communities applications, before the submission date of July 15^th, to ensure you have the best possible chance of acquiring a grant.

Active Communities is just running once in 2013, so, this is your one-off chance to grab some financial help for your work. Call the Foundation on 01773 514850 to see if you are in an eligible ward and book a place or if you cannot make the date arrange a telephone appointment.

Whether your project is just at the ideas stage, or you have already started to draft an application, spending ten minutes talking it over with the funder will help to improve your submission.

Driving growth in your Business – Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Programme

Are you a business owner with ambitions to grow? Have you considered applying for the fully funded Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses Programme?

Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses is an innovative fully funded programme designed to unlock the economic and job creation potential of small businesses and social enterprises from across the Midlands. The Programme is delivered by Aston Business School in partnership with the Goldman Sachs Foundation and it is targeted at business owners who have clear ambitions to expand their small businesses or social enterprises

The aim of the programme is to provide participants with practical tools and resources to help them lay the foundation for long term sustainable growth and job creation in their businesses. This support includes attendance of twelve high quality, practically-focussed business and management education modules, delivered by Aston Business School, plus a range of other tailor-made support services including specialist workshops and one to one business advice. Through the on-going success of the programme, we are proud to be developing a growth orientated network of influential business leaders across the Midlands.

To date a total of seventy-nine business leaders have already completed the Programme, with a forth cohort of thirty businesses currently on the programme. We are now seeking up to thirty business owners or leaders to apply for the fifth cohort, which is due to start in September 2013.

Big Lottery Fund £40m for community health projects

£40m of Lottery funding is to be invested in community health schemes across England as new research reveals that taking part in these projects can make you almost three times happier than if your income were to double.

14 organisations, including local health bodies and leading charities, will receive the funding from Big Lottery Fund to deliver the interventions to encourage healthier eating, increase physical activity and promote good mental health. Many of the projects will target vulnerable and marginalised groups such as families struggling with food poverty; older people experiencing loneliness and isolation; and young homeless people.

The funding comes as research from a five-year report compiled by Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) and the New Economics Foundation (NEF) suggests that community-based health projects can significantly improve people’s happiness and life satisfaction. The research - which surveyed just under 2,000 people taking part in Lottery-funded schemes including cooking lessons for families, cycling and therapeutic gardening projects - showed an average increase in life satisfaction from 6.5 to 7.1 on a ten point scale, which was sustained at least six months after their involvement in projects had ended. To put this into perspective, evidence suggests that even if a person’s income were to double, life satisfaction scores would only rise by just over 0.2 (see notes to editors for more information).

The data, which is one of the biggest sets available in the UK, looking specifically at the impact of community health interventions, also found the proportion of people reporting depressive symptoms fell 35 per cent after taking part in projects and the amount of people feeling relaxed increased by 41 per cent. The projects increased self esteem, with almost 25 per cent more people feeling good about themselves and optimistic about the future. Participants were also more likely to eat five portions of fruit and veg each day, an increase of 16 per cent, and become more active, with those only taking part in low levels of physical activity falling 21 by per cent.

Community Sport Activation Fund – Round 2

The Community Sport Activation Fund is a £40 million Lottery revenue fund developed to support grassroots activity at a very local level. The Fund was designed in response to demand and will aim to unlock potential and resources. We will not prescribe how projects will deliver but will invest in what works best in different areas, based on local evidence.

Projects the fund is aimed at

The kinds of projects we expect to fund include:

Activities reflecting a broad range of sports
Informal opportunities which could lead to regular participation
Multi-sport activities which provide people with a range of choices and opportunities to suit them
Family orientated activities with a focus on 14 plus age group
Local activator roles that focus on directly organising and delivering new opportunities for participation.

Projects could be for up to 3-years and the grants will range from £50,000-£250,000 with partnership funding required.

The best projects for this fund will demonstrate the following key characteristics:

A focus on a clearly defined geographical area and community
Demonstrable understanding of sporting needs
Evidence of what potential participants want or need in order to take part in sport once a week
Local partners working together to deliver and help fund the project
A clear and robust delivery plan
Realistic, but ambitious, numbers for increasing and sustaining once a week participation

Heritage Lottery Fund – First World War: then and now

First World War: then and now provides grants of £3,000 to £10,000 for communities to mark the Centenary of the First World War. HLF also provide grants of more than £10,000 for First World War projects – see Understanding the First World War for more information.

The difference HLF want to make - With a grant from HLF you could make a real difference to a wide range of people by helping them understand the war and its impact better. In particular, HLF believes that involving young people in marking the Centenary is important. See examples of the heritage your project might explore.

In assessment, HLF take account of the broad range of outcomes that your project might achieve. Under First World War: then and now, they expect your project to achieve a minimum of one outcome for people from the list below. It is unlikely that your project will achieve a large number of these outcomes.

Outcomes for heritage With HLF support, heritage will be:

better managed
in better condition
better interpreted and explained
identified / recorded

Outcomes for people With HLF investment, people will have:

developed skills
learnt about heritage
volunteered time

Neighbourhood Planning support

Locality is providing support and grants to help hundreds of areas across the country create neighbourhood plans, with a £9.5m fund available. The Supporting Communities in Neighbourhood Planning programme will officially launch on 1^st May 2013.

What is Neighbourhood Planning? - The Localism Act 2011 introduces statutory Neighbourhood Planning in England. It enables communities to draw up a Neighbourhood Plan for their area and is intended to give communities more of a say in the development of their local area (within certain limits and parameters). These plans will be used to decide the future of the places where you live and work giving opportunities to:

choose where you want new homes, shops and offices to be built
have your say on what new buildings should look like
grant planning permission for the new buildings you want to see go ahead.

Neighbourhood Planning support - The Supporting Communities in Neighbourhood Planning programme will support groups developing neighbourhood plans in two ways:

direct support – advice and support, tailored to meet the needs of supported neighbourhoods
grant payments – up to £7,000 per neighbourhood area, to contribute to costs incurred by the group preparing a neighbourhood plan or order.

The programme is underpinned by activities and resources to share learning, promote good practice, and encourage networking for groups developing neighbourhood plans. Before you apply make sure you talk to your local authority about the support they may be offering and what additional needs you might have.

Who is eligible? -Town and parish councils, neighbourhood forums and emerging neighbourhood forums preparing a Neighbourhood Development Plan or Neighbourhood Development Order in England will be able to apply.

Get ready to apply - In advance of the formal launch you can start to prepare for your application for direct support, grants, or both by previewing the kind of information you will need to supply when you apply. There are different stages of the neighbourhood planning process and the aim of this fund is to support you to move through these stages. We will therefore ask you a number of questions to help us to determine the kind of support you will need.

Heritage Lottery Fund workshops for BAME-led organisations

Heritage Lottery Fund will be running a workshop for BAME-led organisations in Leicester on Wednesday 12 June and would like to encourage Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic organisations that have started to develop their ideas upon a heritage project to come along and learn more about our programmes and processes. The workshop will start at 10:00 and is expected to finish at 13:00, lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The workshops will focus on what HLF looks for in a heritage project, explore a range of heritage projects and themes that has received HLF investment, and discuss our new and amended programmes. There will be other areas that will be discussed and attendees will have opportunity to talk to Heritage Lottery Fund staff.

Heritage includes many different things from the past that we value and want to pass on to future generations. Heritage can include:

people’s memories and experiences (often recorded as ‘oral history’ or spoken history);
histories of people and communities (including people who have migrated to the UK);
languages and dialects;
cultural traditions such as stories, festivals, crafts, music, dance and costumes;
histories of places and events (for example, the development of a village or town or the effects of a war or a strike);
historic buildings;
archaeological sites;
collections of objects, books or documents in museums, libraries or archives;
natural and designed landscapes and gardens;
wildlife, including special habitats and species; and
places and objects linked to our industrial, maritime (to do with the sea) and transport history, such as coal mines, docks and railways

The Grants Officer will be expected to assess and process applications to the Heritage Lottery Fund for grants in the West Midlands region, including progress monitoring of projects undertaken by successful applicants.

SEEM in £1m Incubator Fund Partnership

New businesses in four of the region’s counties will benefit from a new partnership that includes Nottingham based, Social Enterprise East Midlands (SEEM).

The Government has announced the North of England will receive over one million pounds from its Social Incubator Fund to nurture social businesses across the regions and this will include Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire.

‘Social Incubator North’ will be led by Sheffield-based Key Fund in collaboration with SEEM, three other regional Social Enterprise Partnerships, and Locality: the government funding will be matched with another £1m from the delivery partners.

The £10m Social Incubator Fund launched last year is delivered by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of the Office for Civil Society. The funding will enable Social Incubator North to provide investment into local social start-ups or expanding businesses and offer a period of intensive support. This will help turn early stage ideas into successful businesses that change lives, by giving entrepreneurs access to the resources they need to get their ventures off the ground.

Roger Moors, CEO of SEEM said: ‘Social Business can be any kind of model as long as it aims to have a positive social or environmental impact and there’s a demand for it. We really want to inspire people to come forward who have a passionate idea but just need the right support and access to finance to make it happen.’

Key Fund is the only regional social business specific community development finance institution in the UK. It has significant experience of successful investment, consortium management and business development. Ann Oldroyd, CEO of Key Fund, said: “We have over a decades’ experience nurturing new enterprises with a social conscience, and so we’re absolutely thrilled to lead this initiative for the North. Together with our delivery partners we can really make a hugely positive impact across the region.”

Social Enterprise East Midlands (SEEM) will be joined by other delivery partners Social Enterprise Yorkshire and the Humber (SEYH), North East Social Enterprise Partnership (NESEP), Social Enterprise North West (SENW) and Locality.

Each partner is a membership body responsible for directing growth in their particular region. Locality is the national membership body at the forefront of locally led community development and a longstanding partner of government in establishing and leading the growth of regeneration methodologies such as asset transfer and community share issues. It is intended that the programme will launch very quickly, in the next month or so. Applying to BBC Children in Need – changes to grants programmes

BBC Children in Need’s processes for applying for a grant have recently changed and there are also new application deadlines for our Small Grants and Main Grants programmes.

For Small Grants:

Applicants can apply for a one year grant of up to £10,000.

Deadlines are 1^st April, 1^st June, 1^st September, 1^st December and 1^st February

Decisions on applications will be received in 8-9 weeks following the application deadline, for eg applications received for the April deadline will receive an outcome in early June.

For Main Grants

Applicants can apply for a grant of over £10,000 a year for up to 3 years

Deadlines are 15^th May, 15^th September and 15^th January

There is now a 2-stage process for applying - an initial application followed by a full application. If your Initial Application is successful you will be invited to submit a Full Application within a month. Funding decisions will take approximately 5 months from the Initial Application deadline – e.g. if applying in May and invited to Full Application you could hear the outcome in early October.

Who & what we fund

Our vision is that every child in the UK has a safe, happy and secure childhood, and the chance to reach their potential. To achieve this vision, BBC Children in Need awards grants to not-for-profit organisations to make a positive difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. We fund organisations working to combat or alleviate disadvantage, including:

living in poverty or situations of deprivation

behavioural or psychological difficulties
illness, distress, abuse or neglect

We fund work that takes place in the UK and is for the benefit of children and young people aged 18 years and younger. Applicants should be constituted, not-for-profit organisations based in the UK. Applications can be for activities, equipment, salaries, volunteers’ expenses, travel costs etc. - it is up to the applicants to define their needs. For us the most important consideration is the effect such a grant will have on the children and young people, and it is applicants that can demonstrate this that have the greatest chance of success.

Festival of Funding on Thursday 24^th January 2013 between 10.00am – 1.00pm

Are you a new group that hasn’t applied for funding yet and would like to find out which funders to approach?

Are you looking for funding to continue your existing services?
Are you developing new projects/activities that need funding?

If so, come along to our Festival of Funding on Thursday 24^th January 2013 at Community Action, 4 Charnwood Street, Derby. As well as having the opportunity to talk with funders, there will be 6 funding workshops during the morning being delivered by:

A4A England Regional Pilot

Projects throughout England now have the opportunity to apply for repeat and on-going activities under Awards for All in a pilot scheme running until the end of March 2013.

Currently Awards for All does not fund on-going, regular or repeat activities, as the programme has focused on ‘new’ project ideas. However, in these challenging times we are increasingly aware of the pressures smaller groups face with rising costs and cuts to funding, and want to respond to this by looking at alternative ways of funding projects that support those most in need.

Following a successful six month pilot in the West Midlands and Yorkshire and the Humber, we are now rolling out the pilot across England.

This pilot will open out the criteria to all projects where the applicant has an income of less than (or equal to) £30,000 according to their latest accounts.

We envisage this pilot running until 31 March 2013. Any applications received for repeat and ongoing activities over this time period, and meeting the criteria above, will be assessed in the normal way. Please be aware that application materials (Guide for applicants and Application form) will not be changed. Please see the application notes below before applying.
